Episode 9 - What do games do well?

In this episode, Aaron and Chris turn the video game tropes concept on its side, discussing what games do well. How do they win us over? What makes a game *good*? The gamers also discuss the state of mobile gaming in a new segment targeted at understanding different aspects of the pastime. Finally, Aaron helps us settle the great debate between Streets of Rage 2 and Altered Beast.

  1. BCG Discussion Topic - What do games do well?
    -We talked about tropes in a negative way, but what are qualities that make a game excellent? What are we hoping for?
    -What really matters? Length? Story? Controls? Puzzles?
    -What aspects of games, regardless of genre, just make them feel good?
  2. State of Gaming: Mobile - New Segment!
    -Are phones killing purpose-built gaming handhelds?
    -Are are the negatives of using phones for gaming? Input difficulty? Battery difficulty?
    -Can games achieve the same depth of gameplay across both platforms?
    -Are the graphics comparable between the two?
    -Do we really think that Apple/Google are going to take a large market share, or are they simply pulling in new customers that aren't already gamers?
    -Does mobile gaming draw more from existing player bases and/or the hardcore crowd?
    -Will companies like Nintendo go this route in the future? How does Sony fare in this regard?

          -Chris: Ratchet and Clank (PS4) - Exceptional game; one of the best 3D platformers in recent memory. Buy it!
          -Aaron: Altered Beast - The great Streets of Rage 2 vs. Altered Beast saga has come to a close. The verdict? AB is good, but not in the same league as SR2. The incumbent champion remains on top!
